I’m a Rhythm Skater, who loves to mix motion and music on wheels!
This blog is a place to share my love of rhythm skating/roller-dance with others as a unique form of fitness AND fun!
I never really went roller skating as a kid, aside from the occasional birthday party. I actually discovered roller skating as an adult quite by accident after a life-changing injury to my hand, which nearly ended my career as an artist.
Around 2009, I went to a local rink and was immediately hooked by the music and the moves I saw out on the floor.
“White Chocolate” is a name that was given to me by some in my skating family. I’m proud to have been embraced in this culture, and it’s important to acknowledge the African-American origins and masters of rhythm/style skating. Being a visitor in this space is a great honor. Far too often, I see the media whitewashing the history and origins of popular roller skating. I also see people taking credit for, and profiting from, dances and skills they have taken from the culture, but did not create. I hope to educate folks on the true masters and pioneers of the craft as well as the unsung, but thriving community that continues to innovate and elevate the artform. Look for more skate history information within my blog and social channels.
I also hope to share good skating music as well as entertain and encourage others to try skating as a fun alternative to “working out.”
A good skate will make you sweat. 12 times around an average rink is 1 mile, one hour of skating burns 600 calories if you skate constantly. When there’s great music involved, it’s easy to get your health AND your groove on.
